Final Stats
The Siena offense came alive in the second half, but it was too little too late as the field hockey team fell, 3-2 Tuesday night at Lehigh. Senior captain Kristin McGorty and sophomore midfielder Mackenzie Smith accounted for the Siena scoring.
The Mountain Hawks (3-5) erupted for three first half goals to build a commanding 3-0 lead at intermission. Kimberly Eng recorded two of the scores - off a penalty corner and a breakaway - to pad the advantage.
The Saints (2-7) responded at 37:12 in the second half when Smith scored her first goal of the season. She maneuvered through traffic in front of the net and beat Lehigh goalie Lilia Stefaniwsky to get Siena on the board.
The Green and Gold would make things interesting, pulling within one when McGorty notched her second goal of the season. But the comeback bid would end there as Lehigh held on for the victory.
Lehigh out-shot the Saints 29-14, with Siena holding an 11-9 edge in penalty corners. Renee Clavette, who leads the nation in saves per game, added 17 more to her total including 12 in an unblemished second half.
The Saints return to action Sunday to open both a three-game homestand and Northeast Conference play with an afternoon tilt vs. Quinnipiac. Game time is slated for 1 p.m.
