Watch the Game Winning Goal
LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Freshman Daniel Alderstad introduced himself to Siena fans Sunday afternoon when he scored the golden goal that beat Rhode Island 1-0 in the team's home opener. Alderstad's goal was the second rebound off a set piece and gave Siena its second double overtime win over URI in 11 months.
The Saints (2-0) and Rams (1-1) played an evenly matched game throughout. Siena outshot URI 20-14, 11 of which came in the second half.
The game winning goal came off Sebastien Anzevui's free kick just outside the penalty box. He ripped a shot that was labeled for the top corner but goalkeeper Chris Pennock was able to get a hand on it. Nick Viaggio headed the rebound at the near post but it was saved by Pennock again. The ball deflected toward the left side of the goal where Alderstad fired it into the empty net at the 104:05 mark.
Junior goalkeeper Steve Skonieczny made seven saves and recorded his second shutout of the the season. Pennock made nine saves in the loss.
Siena head coach Gareth Elliott is 2-0 against URI since leaving after the 2007 season. He spent five years as an assistant coach after his four-year career there.
Siena returns to action this Tuesday when it hosts Sacred Heart in Loudonville. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
