NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - Thazina Cook fueled a 14-0 run in the second half to defeat Siena 69-55 Saturday afternoon in New Rochelle. Siena held down Iona in the first half as the Gaels shot just 24.2%, but they made over half their shots in the second half (54.5%) and outscored Siena 47-27 in the period.
Iona (8-8, 4-1) used its 14-0 run in a four-minute span to take a 55-42 lead with 8:08 remaining. Cook sparked the run with six points and Catherine Lutz punctuated it with two 3-pointers on consecutive possessions.
Cristina Centeno scored the team's first seven points of the game and Siena (5-9, 3-2) led 28-22 at halftime. Cook scored just three points on 1-of-8 shooting in the first half.
Iona's offense started rolling in the second half. Ivkovic sparked the Gaels with five points on the first two possessions.
Senior Sarah Fullmer made a 3-pointer from the top of the arc to put Siena up 40-36 with 13:03 left in regulation. But Cook answered on the next trip down the court with a 3-pointer from the corner.
Iona scored on every possession during its 14-0 run while Siena went 0-for-3 from the field and turned the ball over four times. The Saints coughed it up 16 times in the game and Iona converted those into 21 points.
Moore ended the four-minute scoring drought with a layup at the 7:34 mark, but the Saints were in too deep a hole. Moore led the team with 14 points and nine rebounds.
Merrick Volpe scored 10 points and had four assists.
Iona's 69 points are the most Siena's allowed in over a month (James Madison scored 85 on December 15). Siena had been averaging 49.4 points/game against in its last five.
Iona's bench outscored Siena's 29-4.
The Saints return to action Monday when they host Marist in Loudonville. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
