LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Siena won its second straight game as it shot 44.7% from the field and held Rider to 27.4%, defeating the Broncs 57-43 Sunday afternoon in Loudonville. Senior guard Allie Lindemann led the team with 17 points and Sarah Fullmer added 13.
Siena's last two games have been the best of the season in terms of field goal percentage defense. Loyola shot 20.8% (10-48) and Rider shot 27.4% (17-62).
Rider (2-17, 0-8) led 7-4 through the game's first 4 ½ minutes until Siena (7-10, 5-3) went on a 9-0 run and grabbed the lead for good. Fullmer scored four points during the run and Cristina Centeno capped it with a 3-pointer. Centeno is shooting 48.1% from beyond the arc the last six games (13-of-27).
Siena held Rider without a point for over six minutes until Amanda Sepulveda made a 3-pointer with 17 seconds left in the first half. Siena led 29-19 at halftime.
The Saints struggled at the start of the second half. They turned the ball over on the first four possessions and Rider cut the deficit to five points (29-24) in the first four minutes. Fullmer scored Siena's first point of the half on a free throw at the 14:50 mark and Centeno made the first field goal at the 13:37 mark.
Starting with Centeno's layup, Siena made 8-of-9 shots from the field and built its lead to 17 points (50-33) with five minutes left in regulation.
Junior forward Cathy Cockrum provided a spark in the second half, scoring seven points on a perfect 3-for-3 from the field (1-of-1 from 3) and added two steals, a rebound and an assist in eight minutes.
Freshman Caitlin Bopp, four-time MAAC Rookie of the Week, only played one minute in the second half before she was removed and seen stretching by the team's bench. She scored four points and had seven rebounds in the first half.
Sepulveda led the Broncs with 18 points, finishing two points shy of 1,000 in her career.
The Saints travel to Buffalo next weekend and will face Niagara Friday evening. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. Siena defeated both Niagara and Canisius at home earlier this season.
