Final Stats
Taylor Akana, Brianne Bobo and Sarah Sivertson all registered double-doubles, and the Siena volleyball team dug deep to pull out an impressive five set (21-25, 25-23, 25-20, 17-25 and 17-15) win at title contender Canisius Sunday. It was the second straight impressive effort for the Saints who lost in five sets to regular-season champion Niagara Saturday.
The news was not all good, however. Senior Aubrey Bobo who missed 18 matches this season with the after effects of a concussion, left early in the first set after taking an elbow to the head. She did not return.
In her absence, Aubrey's sister Brianne stepped up to the front row where she posted 11 kills and added 15 digs. Akana led the Saints with 16 kills and tallied 16 digs. Sivertson had 42 assists and controlled tempo well at the setter spot. She completed her double-double with 12 digs and was a part of six blocks.
Siena's defense was led by libero Lesli Akeo who recorded 29 of the team's 81 digs. The Saints also held a 12-8 advantage in blocks, marking the first time they have led in that category since early in the season.
Emily Elek led Canisius with 17 kills. Renee Lettow had 16.
The fifth set was tight throughout, just like the match. With the score tied at 15-15, Sivertson turned to the middle where Brittany Linetlman finished her ninth kill of the match to set up match-point.
Sivertson went to the outside on the final volley where Bobo ended things with an emphatic kill.
The weekend should provide great confidence for the Saints. The team has struggled throughout the season, but never lost focus. They finish off regular-season play with a pair of MAAC home matches next weekend before heading to ESPN's Wide World of Sports Complex where all 10 league teams vie for the Championship.
