VESTAL, N.Y. - Playing on the road for the first time this season, the Saints ran into a red-hot Binghamton team that shot them out of the building. The Bearcats shot an even 50% compared to just 32.8% for the Saints as the Green and Gold dropped its road lid-lifter 72-59 this evening at the Events Center.
Maja Gerlyng led three Saints (1-5) in double figures with a career-high 15 points in just 14 minutes off the bench, buoying a Siena second unit that outscored Binghamton's (4-4) reserves 30-3. Gerlyng sunk a trio of three pointers, while Cristina Centeno added four treys for a season-high 13 points.
Siena converted nine of their 14 shots from beyond the arc (64.3%) and have made 14-for-25 (56%) from distance over their past two games. But while the Saints' shooting was effortless from deep, they struggled to convert inside the three-point arc, making just 10 of their 44 (22.7%) two-point attempts.
Binghamton meanwhile shot well from all over the court, hitting 23-for-46 from the field and 5-for-12 from three and capitalized on 28 Siena fouls, sinking 21 key free throws.
Trailing 21-19 at the half, Binghamton scored the first basket of the second stanza before both teams would counter each other with a number of runs during an exciting, see-saw affair in the second half.
Siena responded with a 10-2 run to lead by four (31-27) at the 14:40 mark. The Bearcats then countered with an 18-4 run of their own over the next four minutes to build a 10-point cushion, 45-35.
The resilient Saints fought right back, scoring the next nine points to get within one at 45-44 with 8:18 remaining before the Bearcats clawed right back with a 9-0 run of their own to get back up by 10 and put the game out of reach.
Andrea Holmes led Binghamton with 21 points, 12 of which came off her 21 free throw attempts, while Viive Rebane added a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Serena Moore was the lone Siena starter in double figures, netting 13 points to go along with nine rebounds.
Turnovers once again played a key factor against the Saints as they turned it over 22 teams, leading to 28 Binghamton points. The Saints were however strong on the glass, out-rebounding the Bearcats 41-33 including 19 on the offensive end. Binghamton had led the America East in rebounding entering the game.
Siena returns to action Sunday at Sacred Heart. Game time is 2 p.m. from Fairfield, Conn.
