The Siena swimming and diving team came out firing on all cylinders Thursday at the MAAC Championships in Baltimore, Md., swimming to a third place standing with a team score of 143. The Saints shattered four school records and finished in the top-6 in six different events.
Through the first day of three days of events, Marist leads the women's field with a score of 254, with Rider second with 197.5 points, followed by the Saints in third. Rounding out the nine-team field are Loyola (129), Niagara (116), Iona (87), Fairfield (79), Canisius (53.5), Saint Peter's (33) and Manhattan (18).
"Today was a tremendous first day," said head coach Greg Brown. "The excitement on the deck was electric and I am very excited about tomorrow's swims."
Siena kicked off the meet by finishing second overall in the 200 free relay, finishing just .22 seconds behind MAAC favorite Marist. The team of Molly Chamberlain, Caitlyn Biagioli, Brittany Pavolko and Katie Ness swam at a time of 1:35.88, setting a new school record in the process.
Chamberlain and Ness added additional school records later on the first day. Chamberlain finished second overall with a new school record time of 5:00.61 in the 500 free, while Ness also recorded a second place finish with a new school record time of :23.70 in the 50 free.
Additionally, Ness became the first Siena swimmer in program history to swim the 50 free in under 24 seconds and her time was the third fastest in MAAC history.
Siena's final school record on a star-studded day was in the 400 medley relay where the team of Pavolko, Britney Anderer, Kaela Bjornberg and Biagioli finished third overall in the 400 medley relay in a time of 3:56.25.
Pavolko and Bjornberg capped solid showings Thursday in the 200 IM where Pavolko finished fifth overall (2:09.04) with Bjornberg placing sixth (2:09.86).
Day two of the three-day MAAC Championships continues Friday morning at 9 a.m. in Baltimore.
