The Siena swimming and diving team smashed four more schools records Friday and maintained its third place standing through the second day of the MAAC Swimming and Diving Championships in Baltimore, Md. Additionally, the Saints captured the conference championship in the 200 medley relay which was the program's first event championship at MAAC's in seven years.
"This has been an unbelievable MAAC Championships," noted head coach Greg Brown. "We have to give every thing we have left to give on the final day to accomplish our final goal for the season."
Marist continues to lead the women's field through two days of competition with 653 points, while Rider is a distance second with 424.5 points. Siena (340) currently enjoys a modest 21 point advantage over fourth place Loyola (319), with Niagara (262), Iona (233), Fairfield (190), Canisius (143.5), Saint Peter's (75) and Manhattan (37) rounding out the nine-team field.
The clear highlight of the day for the Saints was their championship in the 200 medley relay. The team of Katie Ness, Britney Anderer, Brittany Pavolko and Molly Chamberlain led wire to wire in finishing with a new school record time of 1:46.14.
"The 200 MR was an amazing race," added Brown. "Those four young ladies put together one of the most incredible swims I have ever seen."
Chamberlain and Pavolko added their names to two more records each in the Siena record books as well. Chamberlain finished fourth in the 200 free with a time of 1:53.15, but broke the school record with a time of 1:52.78 in prelims. Pavolko also broke her record in the prelims as well with a time of :57.76 before swimming to a second place time of :57.86 in the 100 fly. The duo also combined with Ness and Caitlyn Biagioli to finish second overall in the 800 free relay with yet another school record time of 7:45.77.
Siena's final record of the day came in the 100 breast where Anderer finished in a third place time of 1:06.04. Other top-six times for the day included Kaela Bjornberg in the 100 fly (4th - :58.18), Lauren Maxwell in the 100 breast (6th - 1:06.99) and Ness in the 100 back (:59.26).
The Saints return to action for the final day of the MAAC Championships which get underway at 9 a.m. Saturday morning.
