POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Siena's first MAAC Tournament run since 2005 was swiftly shutdown by defending champion Fairfield in a 20-4 rout Friday afternoon in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. The Stags scored 20 goals on 32 shots and outplayed Siena from start to finish. The game was a far cry from Siena's one-goal loss at Fairfield in the regular season finale.
"We had an incredible season, unfortunately today didn't go the way we wanted," Head Coach Andrea Duffy said. "[Fairfield] has great players and they find their openings. Their goalie played phenomenal today."
MAAC First Team selection Caitlin Mikel scored two goals in the loss, the first of which broke the schools' single season scoring record set by Lindsey Rosecrans '09 last season. Mikel finishes the season with 67 points on 46 goals and 21 assists.
"She's had an incredible season," Duffy said. "She finds her teammates and she finds openings for herself to score."
Fairfield jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first 15 minutes. The Saints settled down for a few minutes and Michelle Andreo and Mikel tallied goals to make it a three-goal game. But Kristen Coleman scored less than a minute later on a whirling shot and Fairfield finished the first half on a seven goal run.
Coleman, the MAAC Preseason Player of the Year and league's top scorer, was held in check most of the game by senior defender Burgandy McCurty. McCurty frustrated Coleman by shadowing her the entire game. Coleman finished with two goals and both were incredible flailing shots through defenders.
The Saints committed 21 turnovers and Fairfield seemed to make them pay each time.
"This was a heartbreaker after the year we've had," Mikel said after the game. "We worked hard from day one and I'm just proud of this team. Unfortunately sometimes you don't have a good game and today we didn't. Fairfield played great and put it together. Next year I hope we're the team that puts it together."
Fairfield's Erin Rigby led all scorers with five points on four goals and an assist.
Fairfield's Katie Keenan made eight saves in the win while Kristin Concordia made seven saves in the loss.
The Saints finish the season with a 7-9 overall record.
