FARMVILLE, VA. - Highly touted freshman Lindsay Mayo scored her first career goal and senior co-captain Brittany Moran accounted for the other tally but it was not enough as the Saints dropped a 6-2 decision to Longwood Tuesday afternoon.

Playing in nearly 100 degree heat for the second time in three days, the Saints (0-2) fought tough but still succumbed to the heat and the Lancers (1-1).

"We made some adjustments and observations from the previous game and although the result may not have shown that, I think we took a good step forward today," remarked head coach Bill Davidson. "As long as we continue to move in this direction, it should lead to better results in the future."

Trailing 2-0 in the final minutes of the first half, Mayo found the back of the cage for her first collegiate goal. Off a short corner, a shot deflected off the stick of a Longwood defender to Mayo who was all alone on the far post and batted the ball out of the air and into the goal.

Mayo played well all game long on defense as well and registered a key defensive save.

"Lindsay happened to be in the right place at the right time on both her goal and defensive save," added Davidson. "We rely on people to make plays and she did a good job coming through in those two areas today."

Longwood responded to Mayo's tally with three unanswered goals to build a 5-1 lead which proved to be insurmountable. The Saints added a final tally late off yet another corner as Jenna Gifford fired a shot from the top of the circle that deflected off Moran's stick and into the cage.

Lauren van de Kamp led the Lancers with two goals including one off a penalty stroke.

After registering just two corners in the opener, the Saints made the most of their opportunities Tuesday, earning nine corners to Longwood's six. The Lancers however held a 19-6 edge in shots.

Siena now makes the two and a half hour trip west to Radford where it will conclude its season opening three-game road trip tomorrow against the Highlanders. Game time is 2 p.m.
