RADFORD, VA. - When the Siena Field Hockey team embarked on its season-opening three-game road trip last weekend, its goal was to bring home the program's first road win in four years. The Saints will have to wait for another time and another place as the squad dropped a 6-0 decision Wednesday to Radford.
Siena (0-3) finished the trip winless and was out-scored 19-3 with stops at Appalachian State, Longwood and here at Radford (3-0).
In the road trip finale, the Saints got stuck early and often defending inside their own circle. This led to a number of opportunties for the Highlanders who registered 19 short corners in the contest to just six for Siena.
Radford took advantage, scoring four of their goals off of those short corners. The Highlanders peppered the goalkeeping duo of Beth Meyers, who made her first collegiate start, and Alison Baillargeon for 26 shots. But Siena's goalies hung in there, making some nice saves to minimalize the damage as Baillargeon stopped six shots and Meyers turned aside five.
Radford put 17 of its 26 shots on cage, while Siena managed 10 total shots, five of which were on target.
Marlee Schramm and Kay Tufts led Radford with four points apiece.
Offensively, the Saints struggled to mount a sustained attack until late in the second half. Lisa Heimerle and freshman reserve Jessica Smith had the best opportunities late, but like the rest of their teammates, neither could not solve Jennifer Wisniewski who stopped five shots to earn the shutout.
The Saints look to regroup as they return to the Capital Region for their home opener next Thursday, Sept. 9. Siena will host Holy Cross in a 4 p.m. start.
