BUFFALO, N.Y. - Siena is no longer undefeated in 2011. Canisius held the Saints without a field goal for better than 15 minutes and handed Siena its first loss of the new year, 60-48 Sunday afternoon in Buffalo. The defeat snaps a six-game winning streak and four-game road win streak for the Saints which were the program's longest in eight years.
Siena (7-9, 5-1) once again got off to a good start, building an early six-point lead at 17-11 at the 11:30 mark. Maja Gerlyng capped it with her fourth three in the opening minutes as she scored 12 of the team's first 17 points.
It appeared as if the Saints were once again off and running, but things would quickly change. Gerlyng's points were Siena's last over the next 9:51 until two Serena Moore free throws with 1:36 remaining ended a 17-0 Canisius (6-11, 2-4) run.
Siena's field goal drought ultimately lasted for 15:16 as the Saints missed 18 straight shots while turning the ball over seven times until a Moore layup with 15:44 remaining in the game pulled the Saints within 34-23.
Down 15 points moments later, Siena would start to show some life on the offensive end. Cristina Centeno, who scored all 13 of her points in the second half, scored all of the Saints' points during a 6-0 run that pulled the Green and Gold back to within striking distance at nine.
Centeno came through with a big three-point play at the 5:39 mark that got the Saints to within six (48-42), but Siena would be able to get no closer.
Gerlyng led the Saints with 15 points, joining Centeno as the lone Saints in double figures. The Griffs gigantic front line, which featured two regulars who each stand 6'4," limited Siena's looks inside as the Saints shot just 29.1% (16-for-55) from the floor.
Stephanie MacDonald led three Golden Griffins in double figures with 14 points, while Ashley Durham added 13 and Micayla Drysdale 12. Courtney VandeBovenkamp chipped in eight points and a career-high 14 rebounds as Canisius snapped a three-game losing skid.
Siena returns to action Saturday at the ARC when they host Loyola. Tied for second place in the MAAC with 5-1 conference records, the Saints and Greyhounds tip it at 2 p.m. from UHY Court.
