Siena field hockey's goal at the start of the season was to make the program's second-ever NEC Tournament appearance. To do so, they'll need to climb out of an 0-11 out-of-conference hole, one completed Sunday in a 7-1 loss to Saint Joseph's at UAlbany's Alumni Turf Field.
Saint Joseph's (3-6) controlled the ball throughout the first half, recording a 20-1 advantage in shots through the first 35 minutes and a 4-0 lead at halftime. Sophomore goalkeeper Beth Meyers, who led the nation with 13.3 saves per game coming into the contest, stopped 12 shots on the day, but it wasn't nearly enough as Siena managed just three shots on goal and nine in total (compared to the Hawks' 34).
The lone offensive bright spot for the Saints came in the 68th minute, when junior Kelly Johansmeyer recorded her first collegiate goal. Johansmeyer led Siena with four of its nine shots, while sophomore Michaela Sullivan added two.
Northeast Conference play starts Friday at Siena Turf Field, with reigning NEC champion Rider coming to town for a 4 p.m. tilt.
