Saints Drop NEC Opener

Oct. 7, 2011

Box Score

Visiting Rider looked every bit the part of defending Northeast Conference champions Friday afternoon, rolling into Siena Turf Field and handing the homestanding Saints an 8-0 loss. The game doubled as Siena's initial outing in NEC play, but Rider's offense made sure it wouldn't be a successful one.

The Broncs (9-4, 1-0) fired 40 shots in 70 minutes, and scored their first three goals in a two-minute stretch early in the first half. Siena (0-12, 0-1) did its best to keep up defensively, with sophomore goalkeeper Beth Meyers tallying 17 saves and Rachelle Grover, Lindsay Mayo, and Jenn Reich recording one defensive save apiece, but their efforts were not enough to bolster a sagging offensive attack.

Senior Sarah Szewczyk and sophomore Jessica Smith recorded Siena's two shots on goal, and the Saints were outshot 40-7 on the afternoon. Mayo was the only Saint with multiple shots, firing two.

Siena will look for their first win in conference play again this Sunday at home against Monmouth in a 1 p.m. tilt.
