Box Score
There's no greater test for a team then opening your season against the defending National Champions. The Siena men's lacrosse team did just that Saturday when they squared off with fifth ranked Duke. The Blue Devils looked every bit the part of a defending champion, scoring five goals in the game's first eight minutes en route to a 20-6 final at Koskinen Stadium.
11 different Blue Devils (1-0) scored a goal, led by Zach Howell's seven-goal, nine-point performance. Howell scored in the final second of both the second and third periods, the previous giving Duke a 12-3 lead at intermission.
Duke peppered Siena goalies Tom Morr and Bill Kelly all-game long, firing 47 shots to the Saints' (0-1) 22. The Blue Devils also picked up 42 groundballs to Siena's 29.
Chris Roth led the Saints with two goals and an assist, while senior Dan Lawson scored his first two career goals wearing the Green and Gold. Chris D'Alberti and Bryan Renneisen accounted for the Saints' other tallies.
Bryan Neufeld added an assist, becoming the 20th Saint in program history to eclipse the 100 career point mark. Neufeld, who has recorded at least one point in every game of his Siena career, ran the nation's longest active scoring streak to 36 straight games.
The Saints return to action next Sunday when they face off against Air Force in a neutral site affair at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, N.Y. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
