Vermont Spoils Mikel's Record Setting Day

March 16, 2011

Box Score

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Just four days after breaking the program's all-time assists record and becoming just the third player in team history to score 100 career goals, Caitlin Mikel broke an even bigger record Wednesday. The senior attack scored a game-high six points, in the process breaking the program's all-time scoring record, but it wasn't enough as Siena fell 16-9 against Vermont at Siena Turf Field.

Mikel has now tallied 158 career points to pass former teammate Lindsey Rosecrans '09 who originally set the standard, graduating with 153 points. Mikel finished with two goals and four assists and was one of the lone bright spots for the Saints (3-4) in an otherwise frustrating defeat.

Vermont (3-4) jumped on Siena early and often, scoring the initial four goals in the first 6:23 of the game and raced out to a 10-3 lead at halftime. The Catamounts dominated the first half, out-shooting the Saints 24-10 while winning 11 of 14 draw controls in the stanza.

UVM extended its lead to as many as 11 goals in taking a 14-3 lead at the 20:51 mark before Siena began to battle back. The Saints would score the next six goals to pull within 14-9 but in the end simply ran out of time.

Sydney Mas paced Vermont with four goals and an assist while Emma Kelly added a hat trick for the Catamounts which have now captured 12 of 13 all-time meetings with the Saints. Adison Rounds added two goals and an assist to go along with a whopping seven draw controls.

Kristin McMillan contributed a hat trick for the Saints, while Allie Primo, Katie Maguire, Deirdre McQuillan and Kelly Perry added single goals. Amanda Corso picked up four groundballs, while her sister Lauren Corso secured two while leading the squad with three caused turnovers.

The Saints return to action Sunday when they battle Wagner in the First Annual Oyster Bay Classic at Allen Field in Oyster Bay, N.Y. Game time is 1 p.m.
