Box Score
In what was a see-saw game to that point, three straight goals gave Siena women's lacrosse an 11-9 lead at Manhattan Friday night with just 6:16 to go. However, the homestanding Jaspers countered with three late goals of their own, pulling out a 12-11 victory after a golden goal in the final minute.
The heartbreaker came after eight lead changes, and after a physical grind where neither team ever led by more than two goals. Deirdre McQuillan led the Saints (5-6, 0-2 MAAC) with four goals, including a free-position tally that opened the scoring.
Manhattan (4-7, 1-3 MAAC) then took a 2-1 lead after back-to-back goals, but Erin Hepper and Katie Maguire kicked off a 4-1 run for the Saints with consecutive scores. The Jaspers knotted it up at 3, but McQuillan and Kristin McMillan pushed Siena to a 5-3 advantage with 17:17 left in the first period.
It was then that the Jaspers went on a run of their own, a 5-1 stretch that pushed the home team to an 8-6 edge at the half. The Saints came roaring back after the break, with McQuillan and Allie Primo scoring back-to-back tallies to tie it at 8.
Tara Convery scored for the Jaspers to give Manhattan a slim 9-8 lead, but the Saints once again marched back, this time with three straight goals from McQuillan, Casey Harkins, and Primo. However, after Primo's shot found the back of the cage, Siena would not score again.
Manhattan's Chrissy Gutenberger scored twice in the span of seven seconds, the equalizer coming with 3:30 to go. Tied at 11, the Jaspers had possession in the final minute, and Phelici Overbeke fired the game-winner home with 18 seconds to go.
The Saints don't have long to regroup, as they travel to Iona in search of their first MAAC win on Sunday.
