Siena Men's Soccer gave 18th ranked Penn State all it could handle Saturday night. But Minh Vu's goal in the 68th minute proved to be just enough as the Nittany Lions held off the Saints 1-0 at Jeffrey Field in the 15th annual Penn State Classic.
The Saints (0-1) battled throughout and proved to be a major challenge to a Penn State (1-0) team which advanced to the Third Round of the NCAA Tournament a year ago and debuted a top-25 recruiting class this evening.
But Vu snuffed out any chance of an upset bid with a 20-yard blast past rookie keeper Jack Binks midway through the second half. It was the only blemish in an otherwise solid collegiate debut for the freshman who made three saves.
The Saints had several scoring opportunities in the closing minutes, but Andrew Wolverton stoned both Daniel Alderstad and Nathan Olukanmi in a 30-second span inside of 10 minutes to preserve the win. Wolverton also stopped three shots in earning the shutout.
Penn State out-shot Siena 14-8 with both teams taking seven corners apiece.
After facing a Big Ten foe for the first time in the program's 37-year history tonight, the Saints will take on their second opponent from that conference in less than 48 hours Monday. Siena will face No. 15 Ohio State in a 3 p.m. kickoff on the final day of the Penn State Classic.
