Siena field hockey opened their 2011 season at Maine Saturday night, dropping an 8-0 decision to the Black Bears in Orono. The Saints were outshot 34-1 in the contest, and managed just one short corner in 70 minutes.
Siena's lone offensive look came as time expired, with sophomore Lindsay Mayo's shot going wide at the final horn. Maine (1-1) controlled the ball throughout, aggressively peppering the net patrolled by sophomore goalie Beth Meyers. Meyers, who was fifth in the NEC in saves last year, stopped 14 shots, but was unable to stop several looks off rebounds by the Black Bears.
Seven different Maine players scored in the win, with forward Jocelyn Mitchell leading the team with two goals and an assist. In net, Sydney Kolysher and Alicia Frisch combined on the shutout while never seeing a shot on goal.
Siena returns home for their home opener on Friday, hosting Fairfield at 4 p.m. at Siena Turf Field. The Saints will look to win their second home opener in as many years, following 2010's 1-0 win over Holy Cross.
