Once again, Siena field hockey relied on an outstanding defensive effort. And once again, it wasn't quite enough, as the Saints fell to Holy Cross 1-0 in overtime Wednesday night in Worcester, Mass.
After being outshot 26-5 by Fairfield in their home opener, Siena (0-3) was outshot 18-4 by the Crusaders (1-3), but relied on the steady play of sophomore goalkeeper Beth Meyers to stay in the game. Meyers ended the night with seven saves, but couldn't stop a long shot from Holy Cross's Mackenzie Peet in the 75th minute, one that proved to be the game-winner.
Siena could not muster a shot on goal Wednesday night. Lindsay Mayo paced the Saints with a pair of shots, with Kelly Johansmeyer and Theresa Tremblay each contributing one shot apiece in the losing effort.
The Saints will return to the field on Saturday at 2 p.m., when they go back on the road to face La Salle.
