POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Siena's early shooting kept the Saints close for awhile, but in the end the Green and Gold didn't have enough to overcome first place Marist. The six-time defending MAAC Champions capitalized on 21 Siena turnovers, holding a 26-5 edge in points off turnovers in defeating the Saints for a 17th straight time 75-51 Sunday afternoon at the McCann Arena.
Marist (18-7, 13-1) scored the first eight points and it looked like they may put away the Saints (8-15, 6-8) early. But Siena shot the ball well in the opening stanza, connecting on 47.8% (11-23) of its attempts to keep within striking distance.
However, the Saints committed 13 turnovers in the first half leading to a 13-3 edge in points off turnovers for Marist which held a 10-point lead heading into the lockerroom at 37-27.
Marist quickly pushed the lead to 18 in the second half before the Saints made one final surge. Siena enjoyed a mini 7-0 run to pull within 11, 47-36 with 14:55 remaining.
But the Red Foxes would let the Saints get no closer as they responded with an 8-0 run of their own the close things out.
Brandy Gang led four Red Foxes with 20 points. MAAC Preseason Player of the Year Corielle Yarde added 12 of her 15 points in the second half for Marist including a pair of early back breaking threes.
The MAAC's leading scorer Lily Grenci had another consistently strong effort for the Saints with 17 points and eight rebounds as she scored in double figures for the 15th straight game. Clara Sole Anglada continued her hot shooting and made three more three-pointers, scoring 10 of her 13 points in the second half.
Marist shot 48.4% (30-62) for the game and was strong inside where they held a 42-22 edge in points in the paint. The MAAC's worst rebounding team entering the day, the Red Foxes held a 37-29 edge on the glass over the conference's top rebounding squad.
Siena returns to action next weekend for its final two home games of the 2011-12 season. The Saints host Manhattan Friday night in a 7 p.m. tip off at the ARC.
