The opening leg of Siena women's lacrosse's demanding out-of-conference schedule proved too much for the Green and Gold Friday night, as the Saints dropped their season opener at #4 Florida 23-5. Siena hung around in the early stages, but the Gators proved to be too much in handing the Saints a season-opening defeat.
Siena (0-1) didn't back down in the early going, though, as Shannon Pfohl and Deirdre McQuillan scored in the opening minutes to keep the margin at 4-2 through six and a half minutes. However, Florida (3-1) would score the next six goals to break the game open, and despite another goal from Pfohl and two from Michelle Andreo before halftime, Siena was unable to close the gap.
The Saints did hold a 15-14 advantage in ground balls, and senior Kristin Concordia made six saves in net. Meanwhile, McQuillan tallied Siena's lone assist of the game in addition to her first goal of the 2012 season.
Siena completes the season-opening trip to the Sunshine State on Sunday with a 1 p.m. tilt at Jacksonville.
