LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Siena looks to get back into the top half of the MAAC Standings when the Saints host Iona this afternoon at the ARC for National Girls and Women in Sports Day. Complete Gameday Central coverage begins at 2 p.m. right here on SienaSaints.com.
Following back-to-back losses, Siena (6-14, 4-7) enters today tied for seventh in the MAAC Standings with Canisius. With a win today however, the Saints could move as high as fifth with six games remaining on the conference slate.
Following their first losing season in six years last year, resurgent Iona (10-11, 6-4) has a chance to move back to .500 on the season and put some space between them and the rest of the pack for third in the conference.
The Siena-Iona series has been an exciting one of late with the teams splitting the last six meetings here in Loudonville. Additionally, each of the past two years the games here have gone to overtime with the winning side overcoming a second half deficit of 11 points or more to win.
Today's matchup features the top two scorers in the league in Siena's Lily Grenci and Iona's Damika Martinez. Both average 15.4 points per game, with Martinez currently edging out Grenci by just percentage points for the scoring lead.
Just a freshman, Martinez went off for 28 points in an 87-71 Iona win over the Saints exactly one month ago in New Rochelle. Iona also features Preseason All-MAAC First Team selection Kristina Ford, who averages 16.0 points per game but currently doesn't qualify for the scoring title as a result of missing a number of games due to injury earlier this season.
Throughout today's game, the Saints will be celebrating the 26th Annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day. Female student athletes from all of Siena's 11 women's sports programs will be in attendance and recognized at halftime for their contributions and achievements in women's athletics.
