JERSEY CITY, N.J. - Tehresa Coles picked the pocket of Jynae Judson with time set to expire as the Saints held on for a thrilling 61-59 victory over Saint Peter's Thursday night at the Yanitelli Center. In a game that featured 10 ties and 12 lead changes, Siena came up big in the clutch to move into sole possession of sixth place in the MAAC Standings.
Sophomore forward Clara Sole Anglada who has been a revelation for Siena (8-14, 6-7) over the past six games, carried the Saints with a career night. Making her third straight start, Sole Anglada posted a career-high 17 points and tied a career-high with 12 rebounds to go along with three blocks. Over her last six games, she's averaging 11 points, 8.5 rebounds and shooting 50% (10-20) from three-point range.
Sole Anglada gave the Saints the lead back one final time at 58-57 with 1:17 remaining after making two clutch free throws after garnering a huge offensive rebound - her seventh of the night.
Siena pushed the lead to a basket, 61-59, after Maja Gerlyng made one of two from the foul line with 16.7 remaining. The Peahens (2-22, 2-11) then had one final chance to send things to overtime - or perhaps win it.
Judson dribbled around in traffic on the left wing and with the clock winding down, Coles poked the ball away. Cristina Centeno came away with the loose ball and fired it straight up in the air in celebration as the final buzzer sounded.
Lily Grenci led the Saints scoring 14 of her 18 points in the second half. She was clutch at the line, especially late, and made 10-12 from the charity stripe. Centeno added eight points in front of her hometown crowd as the Saints swept the season series from Saint Peter's for a second straight year after having lost seven straight.
Entering the game as the ninth worst shooting team in the nation, the Peahens hung around by making some big shots. For the game they shot 44.9% (22-49), but it wasn't enough as Saint Peter's remained winless at the Yanitelli Center this season.
Saint Peter's placed four players in double figures, led by Kaydine Bent's career-high tying 15-point performance on 7-8 shooting. Aminah Davis added a career-high 14 points as did Judson. But Judson committed nine of the Peahens' costly 22 turnovers including the biggest one of all to end the game and hand Saint Peter's its seventh straight defeat.
Now winners of two in a row, the Saints have a chance to move back to .500 in the MAAC on Sunday. But it won't be easy as the Saints travel to Poughkeepsie to take on six-time defending MAAC Champion Marist at 2 p.m.
