Coming off their best performance of the year Wednesday, Siena Women's Lacrosse looked like it would carry over that momentum to its first win of the season Saturday. But Davidson scored three unanswered goals in the final 3:52 including the game-winner with just 29 seconds remaining to overcome and shock the Saints, 14-13 in North Carolina.
After battling 18th ranked UAlbany to a two-goal margin earlier this week, Siena (0-6) continued to show improvement, enough so that the Saints could taste their first victory of 2012. But Siena will now have to wait at least two more days to break through with their first triumph.
Deirdre McQuillan gave Siena a seemingly safe 13-11 advantage when she scored her fifth goal of the game with 4:52 remaining. But the persistent Wildcats (3-3) had one final punch to throw which would prove to be the decisive one.
Davidson's Erin Keitel scored twice in 44 seconds to nod the game at 13 apiece with 3:08 remaining. After Siena won the ensuing draw control, the Saints turned it over and the Wildcats would control possession for the game's final 2:51.
With 29 seconds remaining the Wildcats made their move as Ann Fucigna completed the comeback by firing home the game winner. The Wildcats would go on to win the final draw control and run out the remainder of the game.
Davidson controlled possession for all but 22 seconds after McQuillan's goal with 4:52 remaining. Siena turned the ball over twice during that time and was unable to register a shot.
Siena had battled back from an early hole to be in position to win it late. After Davidson scored the game's first three goals, the Saints battled back to within 7-5 at the half.
Davidson took an 8-5 lead early in the second half before Siena's offensive came alive. The Saints scored seven of the game's next eight goals in a span of just 10:28 to take a 12-9 lead with 14:46 remaining.
McQuillan led the Saints with a career-high six points while Katie Maguire notched her first career hat trick. Michelle Andreo and Kristin McMillan also added a pair of goals, while Amanda Corso turned in a stellar all-around performance winning five draw controls while also picking up five groundballs and causing three turnovers.
Mary Leonard led a balanced Davidson attack with four points including a hat trick, while four other Wildcats added multiple goal performances.
The Saints conclude their long weekend Spring Break trip to the Carolinas Monday. Siena squares off with Presbyterian at 3:30 p.m. in Clinton, S.C.
