Second Half Goal Stops Field Hockey

Sept. 30, 2012

Final Stats

For the first time this season, the Siena field hockey team went into the second half tied. But an early goal in that period was enough to stop the squad's bid for their first win of the year.

"We are continuing to improve," coach Kara Zappone said. "We played the whole game again and continued to push through the whole game."

Cornell (3-6) dominated the first half attempting 16 shots and forcing Beth Meyers to stop eight of those attempts. Siena (0-7) would only put together two shots in the opening 35 minutes, none of them were on goal.

"We're traditionally a second half team," Zappone said. "After giving up 16 shots, we're still ready and prepared mentally to keep going in the game and fight."

Despite the one-sided stat sheet, the teams would go into halftime scoreless. The winning goal would not come until the 41st minute when Brittany Thompson took a reverse stick shot from the center and found the back of the net. The Saints would have two opportunities to tie the game. Theresa Tremblay and Michaela Sullivan would both put shots on goal but their attempts were picked up by Carolyn Horner.

For Siena, they were outshot 22-4 on the afternoon, while Beth Meyers picked up her 400th career save, while stopping 11 on the day.

The Saints will end their month long road trip as they travel to Fairfield and take on coach Zappone's former team. That game will take place Wednesday Oct. 3, and is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. start.
