The hard work and determination finally paid off for the Siena field hockey team on Friday afternoon when the Saints shutout Sacred Heart 2-0 to earn their first win of the season. Today's win snapped a 54-game winless streak and was the program's first road victory since October 6, 2006.
"We played the game that we always knew we could and we executed perfectly," said Kara Zappone. "The team did a great job playing for 70 minutes and it was a group effort. This win means a lot to everyone and for it to be a shutout is even more rewarding."
The Saints earned 11 shots and had the 8-6 penalty corner advantage over Sacred Heart.
Megan Bohse started the Saints off strong with an unassisted goal at the 19:42 mark in the first half. The goal was Bohse's third goal of the season. The Saints took the early advantage and never looked back.
Junior Gabrielle Sullivan put Sacred Heart away for good after scoring her fourth goal of the season. Katherine Bowie assisted on Sullivan's goal as she maneuvered around the box drawing the goalie out and found a wide open Sullivan for the goal.
Senior goalkeeper Beth Meyers earned the shutout with seven saves while playing the entire 70 minutes.
The win was the first for the program since October 8, 2010 when the Saints shutout Saint Louis 1-0 in Loudonville, N.Y. (54 games), and the first road win since October 6, 2006 (63 road games) when they defeated Fairfield 1-0 in Connecticut.
The Saints will be home on Sunday afternoon to continue their winning ways against MAAC newcomer Quinnipiac. The program will be honoring the five Siena seniors for their dedication to the program over the last four years. The senior ceremony will begin at 12:40 p.m. followed by the start of the game at 1:00 p.m.
