The Saints went up against the nationally ranked UAlbany Great Danes on Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Turf Field on the campus of UAlbany. The Saints were shutout for the second straight game as they lost 6-0 to the Great Danes.
"We played a very good team today, but played them well. We had great opportunities and put pressure on Albany when we needed to," said Coach Kara Zappone. "Playing nationally ranked teams, like Albany, help us to prepare for our MAAC Conference games to start next month. There is a lot that we can take a build upon from today's game."
UAlbany (6-0) senior Daphne Voormolen led the Great Danes' offense scoring two goals (6). Voormolen also assisted on the first two Great Danes' goals early in the first half to finish with six points.
The Saints (0-5) came out strong in the second half, playing UAlbany tough early and managed to briefly control tempo, earning two penalty corners. The Great Danes were able to defuse the Saints' attack when Voormolen and Paula Heuser gained full control of the second half by scoring three goals in the span of six minutes.
Statistically, the Great Danes outshot the Saints 30-2 and 11-2 on penalty corners. The Saints goalkeepers Drabich and Beth Meyers split time in goal, recording a total of 15 saves. Gabrielle Sullivan and Cory dela Gorgendiere also recorded shots for the Saints offensively.
The Saints are home again to play Fairfield on Sunday, September 22 for a 2:00 p.m. start at Siena Turf Field.
