Final Stats
In a game that was a true testament to how far the team has come in the past year the Siena Field Hockey team challenged defending MAAC champion Quinnipiac, but fell 1-0 Friday at Siena Turf Field. Freshman goalie Madi Gilbert set a season-high with eight saves in the loss.
The Bobcats(5-7) tested Gilbert early with five shots in the first 20 minutes, but the freshman goalie passed with flying colors recording saves on all five shots. Quinnipiac would go on to attempt seven shots in the first half, with all but one ending in a save by Gilbert. Siena(0-11) would only manage one shot in the half and the teams went into halftime tied 0-0.
Quinnipiac broke the deadlock in the in the 46th minute when junior Savanna Reilly deflected in a shot from Danielle Allan to take a 1-0 lead. The Saints would pick up four penalty corners and four shots in the remaining 24 minutes, as they tried to mount a comeback. In the 62nd minute Senior Megan Bohse took a shot that found the back of the net, but was deemed a dangerous shot and the goal was waved off.
Quinnipiac was called for two green cards in the 69th minute, but the Saints were unable to put any more shots on goal and the Bobcats would held on for the 1-0 victory. Gilbert finished the game with seven saves and Sage Stebbins led all Saints with two shots on the afternoon.
Siena will aim to pick up that first win of the season next Friday when they travel to Smithfield, R.I. to take on Bryant at 7 PM.
