Oct. 19, 2014 Freshman Rina Sakai competed in singles play and sophomore teammates Mitsuki Fukamachi and Ali Garrity teamed up in doubles competition to represent Siena in the USTA/ITA Regionals at the Yale University Culamn-Heyman Tennis Center in New Haven, Conn. this weekend.
Fukamachi and Garrity defeated the doubles team of Mara Martinez-Santori and Dominique Mortier from St. Bonaventure 8-4, and lost to Lindsey Post and Katie DeRienzo of Sacred Heart (8-6) and Sarah Bowen and Carmen Pestano of Hofstra (8-3). Sakai lost her singles match to Rhiann Newborn of Syracuse 6-3 and 6-0.
The USTA/ITA Regional Championships feature some of the top men's and women's players across the country. Over 8,000 student athletes from NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA, Junior and Community Colleges compete at one of the 84 USTA/ITA Regional Championships held across the country. The Women's Northeast Division I ITA Regional Championships are comprised of teams from Maine to Delaware and were contested from Thursday, Oct. 16 to Sunday, Oct. 19 at the Yale University Culamn-Heyman Tennis Center.
