Marist Rallies Past Siena, Takes Control of MAAC

Oct. 25, 2014

Final Stats

Siena dominated the first set 25-13, but Marist showed why it has won 19 of its 22 matches, rallying to take the next three sets to win the matchup of the top two teams in the MAAC standings 3-1 (13-25, 25-14, 25-23, 25-14) Saturday in the ARC.

Rachel Stoklosa posted a double-double with 10 kills and 16 digs and Samantha Pethokoukis had eight kills without an error in 13 swings for Siena (10-13, 8-3). Mackenzie Stephens led all players with 12 kills for Marist (19-3, 11-1).

The Saints kept Marist out of system for the entire first set, cruising to a 12-point win behind great serving by Stoklosa, Haley Howell, Erin Bies and Kiara Pierre.

Marist scored nine straight points to take an 11-1 lead in the second set thanks to the serve of Lexi Millington. The Red Foxes won the second set 25-14 to take momentum to the lockerroom.

After intermission, the two teams played a hotly contested third set that could have gone either way. Siena used a 5-1 run to build a 20-16 lead late, but just as they did in their 3-1 home win over the Saints in Poughkeepsie two weeks ago, Marist answered back. The Red Foxes won five of the next six points to tie the set at 21-21, and with the set tied at 23-23 they took advantage of a Siena attack error and won the set on Kelsey Lahey's kill.

Marist jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the fourth set, but Siena didn't go down easily. Bies keyed a 7-1 run that cut the Red Foxes lead to 10-8. It was 15-12 Marist when the wheels fell off for Siena. The Red Foxes won 10 of the last 12 points, closing the match on a 6-0 run behind the service of Becca Jones.

Statistically, the match was even. Siena controlled a 42-40 edge in kills and a 66-60 advantage in digs. The Saints were done in by seven serving errors, many coming at inopportune times.

Bobbi Lin Kalama led all players with 19 digs for Siena and Sonja Vasovic added 10 kills.

The Saints return to action Wednesday night against archrival Fairfield. The top two teams get a bye in this year's MAAC Tournament which returns to Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex November 20-22.
