Siena Retains #FranciscanCup

Nov. 19, 2014

Final Stats

The Franciscan Cup is coming back to Loudonville. Marquis Wright led five Siena players in double figures with 15 points and added eight assists in 39 minutes to lead the Saints past sister school St. Bonaventure 73-70 to win the Franciscan Cup for the second straight season.

It was Siena's first ever win in the Reilly Center.

"A lot of people around the country don't know what a big game this is, but it's a big game because the Franciscans are great people," Siena coach Jimmy Patsos said. "That's sometimes lost in playing, and we're going to play this game as long as I'm the coach."

Siena grabbed a 14-13 lead on Rob Poole's jumper with 9:30 left in the first half and never trailed again. The Saints led by as many as 17 in the second half and 73-61 with just 21 seconds left before the Bonnies made three desperation three-pointer in the final seconds.

The Saints dished out 21 assists on their 24 made baskets and turned the ball over just five times all night, including none in the second half, against St. Bonaventure's press. Wright was the main catalyst, and he got everyone involved.

Lavon Long posted a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds and added five assists without a turnover. Javion Ogunyemi added a career-high 13 points coming off the bench for the first time this season, Rob Poole stuffed the stat sheet with 12 points, five rebounds, three assists and four steals, and Ryan Oliver continued his hot shooting with 11 points.

Andell Cumberbatch had 24 points and 11 rebounds to lead St. Bonaventure and Marcus Posley added 22 points and seven rebounds.

It was an especially big win for Siena considering they started the season with losses to UMass and Vermont and now have a season-long nine day break.

"It's half off - we played a really tough, challenging schedule at our level and came out 1-2 and I couldn't be prouder," Patsos said. "I couldn't be prouder for the efforts we made in these three games and I hope they'll serve us later."

Siena returns to action Saturday, November 29 at Loyola - the school Jimmy Patsos coached for nine years before accepting the Siena job in April of 2013.
