ALBANY, N.Y. - UAlbany went on a 27-2 run spanning 7:32 midway through the second half to rally past Siena Women's Basketball 76-57 in the Professional Fire Restoration Services Albany Cup at the Times Union Center. Reigning America East Player of the Year Shereesha Richards scored all 20 of her points in the second half for the Great Danes which have won the past five meetings.
Freshman forward Margot Hetzke led Siena (3-4) with 16 points and senior captain Tehresa Coles added 14 points, seven rebounds and three steals for the Saints which have lost four straight.
Imani Tate added 20 points for UAlbany (5-3) and Tiana-Jo Carter contributed a career-high 16 for the Great Danes which shot 61.3% in the second half.
Siena started hot, going on an early 16-4 run to take a 19-12 lead at the 8:04 mark. The Saints would lead by as many as 10 points in the opening stanza in taking a 30-27 lead at the break after having trailed by 28 points at the half in last year's matchup.
The Saints took early advantage of 16 first half UAlbany fouls, shooting 22 free throws (making 16) as opposed to just 21 field goal attempts over the first 20 minutes. Siena dominated the glass as well, out-rebounding UAlbany 24-11 in the opening stanza. The Great Danes had entered the day ranking 13th nationally in rebounding margin (+12.3).
But Richards, who was held scoreless in just four foul plagued first half minutes, took over in the second half for UAlbany. She shot 9-12 from the field over the final 20 minutes and scored 16 of her 20 points during the Great Danes' decisive run as they turned a 44-36 deficit with 14:23 to play into a commanding 63-46 lead with 6:51 remaining.
Meanwhile Siena shot just 31.9% for the game and went 8:22 without a field goal during the run. The Saints misfired on 10 straight shots and committed nine turnovers during the spurt. UAlbany took advantage, scoring 37 points off Siena's 25 turnovers and outscored the Saints 52-18 in the paint.
Siena will look to bounce back Wednesday when the Saints face Sacred Heart at 7 p.m. in Fairfield, Conn.
