FAIRFIELD, CONN. - Siena Women's Basketball ended the game on a 32-9 run to rally from a 13-point second deficit and defeat Sacred Heart 75-65 at the William H. Pitt Center. Senior captain Tehresa Coles spearheaded a solid all-around team effort with 21 points, seven rebounds, a career-high seven assists and a career-high tying six steals.
Sophomore captain Meghan Donohue added a career-high 17 points and freshman Margot Hetzke contributed 17 points of her own for Siena (4-4) which snapped a four-game losing streak.
Tied at 38 at the break, Sacred Heart (4-5) scored the first nine points of the second half and ultimately built their biggest lead of the game at 56-43 with 13:31 to go. But that's when the Saints responded.
Siena reeled off an 18-2 run over the next 8:39 to reclaim a 61-58 lead with 4:52 to play. Fittingly enough Coles scored the go-ahead basket, picking the pocket of Gabrielle Washington and going coast-to-coast to put the Saints back on top for good.
The Pioneers scored on the ensuing possession to pull within a point, but Siena scored the next eight points to push the run to 26-6 and put the game away.
Coles was the difference. Offensively she shot 9-13 from the floor and defensively she tied her career-high of six steals for the sixth time in her career. Coles, who entered the day ranked 16th nationally in steals, moved into a sixth place tie with Arlene Beers `90 on the Saints' all-time career steals list with 239.
Washington led Sacred Heart with 20 points, while Adaysha Williams added 15 points and career-highs of 12 rebounds and five steals for the Pioneers which have lost four straight.
Senior Ida Krogh was the fourth Saint in double figures, scoring 13 points for Siena which shot 52.9% from the field and tied a season-high with 17 assists. Despite committing 23 turnovers to the Pioneers' 19, the Saints held a 31-13 edge in points off turnovers.
The Saints have a quick turnaround as they head back on the road Friday for their final non-conference road game, a 7 p.m. contest at Binghamton.
