VESTAL, N.Y. - Four Saints scored in double figures as Siena Women's Basketball overcame a sluggish start to put away Binghamton 62-53 at the Events Center. With the win, Siena assured itself a winning non-conference record for the second straight season after having not accomplished that feat in the previous 11 years.
Junior forward Symone Kelly, sophomore captain Meghan Donohue and freshman forward Margot Hetzke all scored 12 points apiece for the Saints (5-4) which head into a nine-day holiday break riding back-to-back road wins. Senior captain Tehresa Coles once again filled the stat sheet with 11 points, a career-high tying seven assists, six rebounds and five steals for Siena which completed the road portion of its non-conference schedule with a perfect 4-0 record.
Binghamton's (1-10) two freshmen stars Jasmine Sina and Imani Watkins - who rank amongst the national leaders in freshman scoring - led the Bearcats with 21 and 14 points respectively.
Both teams got off to slow starts with Siena harboring a 22-21 lead at the break. Each side shot under 40% and combined for 25 turnovers in the opening half.
The Saints responded out of the lockerroom though and bridged the halves with an 11-0 run over 7:13 to claim a 29-21 lead at the 17:58 mark. Binghamton missed eight consecutive shots and committed six turnovers during their scoreless drought which ultimately lasted 7:53.
Binghamton would hang around though thanks to 10 three-pointers, including two straight to rally within 40-37 with 10:36 to play.
But Siena would ultimately wear down the undersized Bearcats inside. The Saints, which held a 28-10 edge in points in the paint and out-rebounded Binghamton by 11 in the second half, reeled off nine unanswered points including six inside from Kelly to build a 14-point lead with 4:50 to go and put the game out of reach.
Kelly's 12 points were a season-high and she added five rebounds while shooting 5-8 from the field. Hetzke scored all 12 of her points in the second half and added eight rebounds. Donohue did the majority of her damage in the first half where she scored 10 of her points while finishing with seven rebounds.
Three players accounted for 46 of Binghamton's 53 points as Kim Albrecht added 11 points for the reeling Bearcats which have lost nine straight and 24 of their last 26 dating back to last season.
Siena returns to action following the Christmas Break a week from Sunday when they host Colgate on Dec. 28 at the Times Union Center. The women's game will be the second half of a Siena Basketball doubleheader with tip-off slated for 4 p.m.
