Offensive Explosion Leads Saints to First Win

Aug. 28, 2014

Final Stats

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - After being shut out in their first two games of the season, Siena's offense came alive in a big way Thursday. The Saints erupted for three goals en route to a 3-2 victory over defending America East co-Regular Season Champion Stony Brook at Siena Field.

Freshman Madison Vazquez and senior Maria Jones netted their first collegiate goals for the Saints (1-2), while junior Michelle Yanniello scored the eventual game-winner.

Stony Brook (1-2) out-shot the Saints 16-10 and put 12 of their attempts on target, but senior captain Taylor Booth was solid between the pipes in making 10 saves.

Raven Edwards bookended Siena's three goals, scoring the first and final goals of the match for Stony Brook. After Edwards put the Seawolves on top in the eighth minute, Siena responded with three unanswered goals in just a 36-minute span.

Making her collegiate debut, Vazquez netted the Saints' first goal of 2014 in the 18th minute. She settled a pass from senior Danielle Christiano, spun and blasted home her first career goal from the top of the six to knot the score.

Jones would give the Saints their first lead of the season just two and a half minutes before the break. Reigning America East Goalkeeper of the Year Ashley Castanio couldn't corral a cross from the right for Stony Brook. Freshman Kelsey Horst collected the loose ball and found Jones all alone in front to punch in the go-ahead tally into the wide open net.

Yanniello capped the scoring with what proved to be the decisive goal in the 54th minute. Christiano picked up her second assist, stealing a pass in deep and centering a feed left to right in front to Yanniello who headed it home.

Siena will look to build upon their victory when they face crosstown rival UAlbany Sunday night at 7 p.m. at Bob Ford Field.
