Saints Shut Down La Salle to Win Season Opener

Aug. 31, 2014

Final Stats

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - The Saints held La Salle without an attempt on target and just nine shots in total as Siena Soccer won its season opener, shutting out the Explorers 1-0 at Siena Turf Field. Junior Tom Allen scored the decisive goal in the 40th minute.

Freshman goalkeeper Josh Weiss was active, but did not need to make a save in posting a clean sheet in his collegiate debut for the Saints. It marked the first time that Siena held its opponent without a shot on goal since a 2-0 win over UAlbany on Sept. 23, 2012.

In the waning minutes of the first half, freshman Paolino Curto set up the Saints' first goal of 2014. He served a cross from the right which found the boot of Allen who tapped it inside the near right post for the only offense the Saints would need.

La Salle had its best chance to knot the score in the 57th minute. A free kick from 30 yards out found Joe Farrell open behind the Saints' defense, but his shot rang off the post and the rebound attempt by Colman Kennedy was sent wide.

Mike Kirk turned aside three of the Saints' 13 shots for La Salle.

Siena, which plays three of its first four matches of the season at home before embarking on a six-game road trip, hosts Boston University Wednesday at 4 p.m.
