Sept. 12, 2014 Final Stats
The Siena volleyball team got off to another hot start Friday in the First Round of the Hofstra Invitational, but for the second straight match that success was short lived in a 3-1 (16-25, 25-23, 25-16, 25-21) to Sacred Heart Friday.
Freshman Samantha Pethokoukis was a part of 10 of Siena's 20 blocks, and sophomore transfer Sonja Vasovic killed 10 of her 19 attacks in the middle as the Saints dominated the action up front. Jacqueline Skeen killed nine of her 17 swings.
Bobbi Lin Kalama and Kiara Pierre split the setting duties with regular setter Haley Howell unavailable. While the middle was hot, Kalama or Pierre couldn't much success outside.
The Saints scored nine of the last 11 points in the first set to take a quick 1-0 lead, but Sacred Heart fought back to even the match with a tight 25-23 win in the second. The Pioneers never trailed in the third or fourth sets, but the decisive fourth set was tied 14-14 before SHU won three straight points.
Makayla Dole led all players with 14 kills for Sacred Heart. Tori Hunter had 13 and Sarah Krufka added 10. Marie Zimmerman had 45 assists and 10 digs.
Siena completes play in the two-day event with a 1:30 match against host Hofstra and a 5 p.m. date with Fordham Saturday.
