Loudonville, N.Y. - In a game that went down to the wire, Georgetown was able to edge out Siena 1-0 at Siena Turf Field. The Hoyas turned away a penalty stroke and two shots in the final two minutes to hold on for the victory.
A scoreless game for 63 minutes, the action ramped up in the final 7 minutes of play. Off a penalty corner in the 64th minute Georgetown's Devin Holmes scored from the right side of the net. The next four minutes of play saw a yellow and green card for the Hoyas and Siena swap their goalie for a position player to help their final push.
An aggressive attack for the Saints led to a foul deep in Georgetown territory, resulting in a penalty stroke for senior Megan Bohse. Bohse attempted a shot in the bottom right corner of the net but was turned away by Hoya goalie Rachel Skonecki.
The Saints were not done, as Bohse and Katie Wells attempted shots in the final minute, but both shots were blocked before they could reach the net allowing Georgetown to hold on for the victory. The Saints attempted nine shots on the afternoon.
Siena's best scoring opportunity came in the 44th minute when a Bohse shot off a penalty corner hit the left post. The Saints defense held strong for most of the afternoon as Georgetown was only able to attempt three shots, despite drawing 11 penalty corners. The three shots allowed by the Siena was their lowest total since the Saints allowed two shots to St. Louis in October of 2010.
Siena is next in action Wednesday October 1st, as they travel to take on crosstown rival UAlbany at 3 pm.
