Siena lost two straight set decisions to Rutgers of the Big Ten (25-11, 25-20 and 25-21) and Seton Hall of the Big East (25-21, 25-14 and 25-18) on the opening day of play in the Seton Hall Invitational Friday in South Orange, N.J. Senior captain
Rachel Stoklosa led the Saints in kills in both matches, tallying 21 on the day.
Rutgers 3, Siena 0
The Scarlet Knights raced to a 17-3 lead to start the match, reeling off 11 straight points behind the service of Ali Schroeter (seven on attack errors) to take command. Siena recovered to play a competitive second set, trailing just 19-17 before a 4-0 Rutgers run made it 2-0. The third set was even closer, with Siena pulling within 22-21 on a kill from Stoklosa and an attack error, but Rutgers scored the final three points to secure the match.
Stoklosa had eight kills, five digs and two blocks for the Saints. Meme Fletcher led all players with 14 kills for Rutgers.
The Scarlet Knights out-dug Siena 49-36. Meghann Wright had 10 of Siena's digs and added six kills. Freshman Samantha Pethokoukis played well in her collegiate debut finishing half of her six swings and adding two blocks. Schroeter ended with three aces and 19 digs for Rutgers.
Seton Hall 3, Siena 0
Stoklosa tied for a match-high with 13 kills and Siena was in all three sets for a while in a 3-0 loss to the host Pirates.
The Saints used a late 3-0 run to close within 21-20 in the first set before Seton Hall scored four straight to go up 1-0. Siena had a 12-10 lead in the second set, but the Pirates went on a huge run, winning 15 of the final 17 points to take command of the match. Shelbey Manthorpe served the final 11 points and her sister Stacey had six of her team-high 13 kills in the set. The Hall led just 17-15 in the final set before winning eight of the last 11 points to close out the match.
Shelbey Manthrope had 33 assists from her setter post and eight digs. Siena got 14 digs from libero Bobbi Lin Kalama and nine each from Erin Bies and Briana Flagg. The Saints out-dug the Pirates 50-47, but suffered their fourth straight loss after a season-opening win over Lehigh.
Siena closes out play in the Tournament with a 10 a.m. match against Cornell and a 2 p.m. contest with UNLV Saturday.
