Loundonville, N.Y. - The Siena Field Hockey team scored first, but was unable to score again, as they lost to Villanova 2-1 Sunday.
Danielle DeGroot scored for the Saints, the team's first goal of the season.
The Saints, who had been held scoreless their first two games of the season, struck early as DeGroot scored her first collegiate goal off a penalty corner in the 13th minute. The Saints outshot the Wildcats 6-4 in the first half, but Andrea Conte was able to score the equalizing goal in the 24th minute.
Villanova pulled ahead in the 55th minute on a goal by Abigail Freitag, her second of the season. Megan Bohse had two shots in the final fifteen minutes, but the Saints couldn't find the back of the net as Villanova held on for the win.
Siena continued their steady improvement on the season recording eight shots and eight penalty corners, both tops on the season. Goalie Mary Drabich had two saves on the afternoon, while Bohse and Callie Weise both recorded a defensive save to help the cause.
The Saints travel to Loretto, Pa. Saturday to take on Atlantic-10 foe, St. Francis (Pa.)
