LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Quinnipiac scored 54 second half points on 68.8% shooting as the MAAC frontrunners raced past Siena Women's Basketball 87-62 at the ARC. The Bobcats went on a 22-2 run midway through the second half to pull away.
Quinnipiac's (18-3, 10-0) pressure defense was the difference over the final 20 minutes. The Bobcats forced Siena (12-9, 5-7) into 19 turnovers in the stanza, leading to 28 of their points. Ranked ninth in this week's CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top-25 Poll, the surging Bobcats have now won eight straight overall by a margin of 24.4 points.
Leading 45-41 five minutes into the second half, Quinnipiac embarked upon their decisive 22-2 run spanning just 5:54 to open a 24-point lead with 8:42 to go. Quinnipiac shot 10-12 during the spurt and scored 14 of those points off six Siena turnovers. The Saints finished with a season-high 28 miscues on the night.
Nikoline Ostergaard led Quinnipiac, scoring the Bobcats' first 10 points of the second half and all 16 of her points on a perfect 8-8 shooting in just the first 8:14 of the stanza. Michigan transfer Val Driscoll added 10 points for a balanced squad which saw all 15 Bobcats who played score as Quinnipiac received 49 points from its bench.
Freshman guard Kollyns Scarbrough led the Saints with 16 points, while senior captain Tehresa Coles added 14 points, six rebounds and four steals. Freshman forward Margot Hetzke contributed 13 points and six rebounds for the Saints which held a 37-24 margin on the glass in out-rebounding their opponent for the 23rd straight game.
Siena had come out with lots of energy on both ends of the court and went on an 18-6 run to claim their biggest lead of the game at 26-16 with 8:55 remaining in the first half. But the Saints got into foul trouble late as Quinnipiac rallied to knot the score at 33-all at the break.
Siena forced Quinnipiac into an uncharacteristic 11 turnovers in the opening stanza as opposed to just seven assists. The Bobcats entered the day ranking fifth nationally in assist-to-turnover ratio.
Next up for Siena is Rider whom the Saints lost to at the ARC just two days ago. The Saints will battle the Broncs for the second time in eight days Thursday in a 5 p.m. tilt in New Jersey that will be televised on ESPN3.
