JERSEY CITY, N.J. - Siena Women's Basketball opened the second half on a 25-7 run to shake Saint Peter's 65-40 at the Yanitelli Center. Freshmen led the way for the Saints as Margot Hetzke netted a game-high 16 points and Kollyns Scarbrough added 15.
Sophomore guard Emia Willingham chipped in a season-high 11 points off the bench for Siena (8-5, 1-3) which beat Saint Peter's (1-11, 1-3) for the ninth time in a row to secure their first conference victory.
The Saints overcame an ugly first half for both teams in which Siena shot just 34.6% from the field and committed 12 turnovers. Nonetheless Siena, which never trailed, took a 23-20 lead into the break.
The Saints put the game way early in the second half. Siena rebounded to shoot 51.9% and committed just three turnovers in the stanza, while the Peacocks were limited to just 28% (7-25).
Siena took advantage of Saint Peter's miscues, holding a 26-6 edge in points off turnovers and a 21-8 margin in second chance points as the Saints out-rebounded the opposition for the 15th straight game.
The 40 points allowed by the Saints were the fewest since a 34-33 win over Manhattan in the MAAC Tournament Quarterfinals on Mar. 2, 2012. Saint Peter's entered the day ranked last nationally in scoring (44.6).
Hetzke added six rebounds, while Scarbrough shot 6-8 from the field and contributed seven rebounds for the Saints.
Freshman Alyssa Velles was the lone Peacock in double figures with 15 points, while junior Hala Mostafa added six points, seven rebounds, three assists and four blocks off the bench.
Siena continues its three-game road trip with its annual Western New York trip next weekend. The Saints open at Niagara for the Purple Eagles' Kid's Day Game Friday at 11 a.m.
