Siena Cross Country capped another season which saw continued marked improvement with a strong showing at the ECAC/IC4A Championships held at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx Saturday. The men finished seventh of 22 teams in the 107th running of the 5-mile IC4A race, while the women placed eighth of 17 in the 30th installment of the 5K ECAC run.
"I thought both teams had consistent showings to end the season," said head coach John Kenworthy. "It certainly wasn't our best day as a program, but the end of a cross country season can really wear a team down and I thought we showed great consistency and poise through it all. The women rebounded especially well from their performance last week at regionals and beat some teams we hadn't yet this season."
The men capped one of the most successful seasons during the program's two-and-a-half decade MAAC era, placing third amongst their seven conference foes in the race. In his final cross country competition, senior Tom Higgins led the way with a 19th place finish. His time of 26:20.5 was the second fastest Van Cortlandt Park 5-mile time in program history.
The men placed four in the top-40 overall, with junior Paolo Fiore (26:45.8) checking in 32nd, senior Nick Miller 34th (26:47.6) and junior Nick Cornine 40th (26:54.8).
On the women's side, junior Shannon Bauer capped arguably the most decorated season in program history. Having already broken the program's 5K, 6K and MAAC Championship times this fall, Bauer added another feat to her long list of 2015 accomplishments in running the program's fastest-ever Van Cortlandt Park 5K time. She crossed the finish line in 18:40.9 – breaking the program record by nearly 11 full seconds – to finish ninth overall and secure All-East honors.
Thanks in large part to Bauer, the Saints finished third of six MAAC schools in the race. Senior Christie MacFarlane capped her brilliant cross country career finishing 34th overall with a time of 19:17.9.
The Saints now turn their focus to the start of the program's first official Division I indoor track season. Siena makes the program's indoor track debut at the Yale Season Opener Dec. 5 in New Haven, Conn. at 11:15 a.m.
