ANNAPOLIS, MD. -- Siena Women's Basketball is officially in the win column and the Saints couldn't have been much more impressive in securing their first victory. Siena led from start to finish and by as many as 26 points in routing Morgan State 69-46 in the Navy Classic Consolation Game at Alumni Hall.
Navy Classic All-Tournament Team selection Kollyns Scarbrough led a balanced Siena (1-5) attack, reaching double figures for the sixth straight game to start the year with 15 points to go along with six rebounds and four assists. Seven of the nine Saints who played scored seven or more points in a complete team win.
Siena led by as many as 12 points in the first half and by 10 at the break, 30-20. Morgan State (1-5) scored the first five points of the third quarter to halve the deficit, but the Saints responded with a decisive 29-8 run over 7:43 to build a 59-33 advantage and put the game away.
Siena controlled the interior in the third quarter, holding a 16-4 edge in points in the paint over the 10-minute period. The Saints' aggressive attacking mentality paid huge dividends as Siena induced 13 third quarter fouls leading to a whopping 20 free throw attempts.
The Saints' defense did the rest, holding the Lady Bears to just 22.5% shooting (16-71). Siena registered a season-high seven blocks and swiped 10 steals in forcing 20 Morgan State turnovers. Despite committing 20 turnovers of their own, Siena held a 21-8 edge in points off turnovers.
Sophomore forward Emmanuella Edoka recorded her first collegiate double-double off the bench for the Saints with career-highs of 11 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks. Edoka continues to be a rebounding machine and has recorded double-digit rebound performances in three of the past four games, and is now averaging 7.2 rebounds in just 16.0 minutes of action off the bench this season.
Red-shirt sophomore guard Denisha Petty-Evans was the third Saint in double figures, scoring 10 points and adding three steals. Sophomore forward Margot Hetzke added seven points, nine rebounds and two blocks in joining Scarbrough on the All-Tournament Team after averaging a double-double with 11.5 points and 14.0 rebounds for the weekend.
Lexus Spears paced the Lady Bears with 10 points and nine rebounds in 16 foul plagued minutes. However the Saints shut down Morgan State's leading scorer Braennan Farrar, a Preseason Second Team All-MEAC selection who came in averaging a team-high 13.6 points. Farrar scored seven points on just 2-18 shooting and committed five turnovers. After opening the season with a victory over NAIA school Washington Adventist, Morgan State has now dropped five straight against Division I competition by an average of 31.6 points.
The Saints conclude their five-game stretch away from home next weekend as conference play commences with a two-game MAAC weekend to open December for the second straight season. Siena tips off its 27th MAAC season Friday night at Monmouth at 7 p.m. on ESPN3.
