Hymes Sends Saints Past Marist in Final Seconds

Feb. 12, 2015

Final Stats

Evan Hymes raced the length of the floor and scored the game-winning layup with six seconds left after a Marist turnover to give Siena a much-needed 66-64 win Thursday night in Poughkeepsie. The Saints led the entire game, and by as many as 18 with 13 minutes left, before Marist made a furious rally.

"Every time I come to McCann Arena it's a tough game," Siena coach Jimmy Patsos said. "It's always an adventure here. We wanted a broken play and somebody going to the rim, and (Hymes) made the layup. I'm really happy for Evan. Everybody keeps counting us out, but we're not counting us out."

Manny Thomas' two free throws after Lavon Long was whistled for a flagrant foul tied the game at 64 with 42 seconds left. Marist had the ball and used most of the shot clock before Eric Trigh turned the ball over on the drive. Hymes scooped up the ball and darted around Khallid Hart to score the winning bucket with an underhand layup.

Hart was a one-man show for Marist (5-20, 4-11), finishing with 30 points on 10-15 shooting.

Siena (10-14, 7-8) got 15 points from Rob Poole and Marquis Wright. Wright added six assists and four steals.

It was a significant win for the Saints. They pulled within half a game of Canisius and Quinnipiac for fifth place in the MAAC. The top five teams get a bye in the conference championships.

Siena's win avenged a heartbreaking 65-64 loss at Marist last season when the Red Foxes scored five points in the final seven seconds after the Saints appeared to have the game won.

Siena dominated to game for the first 30 minutes. They led 38-25 at halftime and 53-35 after Hymes hit a three-pointer with 13 minutes on the clock. It was 64-46 with 2"11 left when Chavaughn Lewis ignited the game-tying 8-0 run with two quick baskets.

Marist shot 68% (15-22) in the second half after making just 36% of their field goals in the first half.

Javion Ogunyemi scored 10 of his 12 points in the first half and made all five shots he attempted in the game.

Siena will try for its first winning MAAC weekend of the season when it hosts Monmouth Saturday night at Times Union Center.
