LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Reigning MAAC Rookie of the Year Victoria Rampado hit the go-ahead basket with 48.6 seconds remaining in overtime as Niagara grinded past Siena Women's Basketball 64-59 at the ARC. The game marked the Saints' 15th Annual Pink Zone presented by Berkshire Bank, raising both money and awareness for Capital Region Action Against Breast Cancer (CRAAB!).
Freshman forward Margot Hetzke led the Saints (14-10, 7-8) with 15 points, eight rebounds and a season-high three blocks while classmate Kollyns Scarbrough added 13 points for Siena which has lost six straight overtime games spanning the past five years.
Sylvia Maxwell came off the bench and scored all 15 of her points after halftime for Niagara (11-13, 7-8) which earned its first win at the ARC since Dec. 5, 2003 and pulled even with the Saints for fifth place in the MAAC Standings.
Siena shot just 30.6% from the field but stayed close throughout thanks to 20 offensive rebounds. The Saints held an 18-5 edge in second chance points.
The Saints host just 25% in the opening stanza, but trailed just 25-23 at the half. Niagara led by as many as seven points early, but scored just one basket over the final eight minutes while committing eight turnovers. The Saints took advantage of the Purple Eagles' miscues, holding a 23-12 edge in points off turnovers for the game.
Siena claimed a four-point lead in a seesaw second half, 52-48 on a pair of Hetzke free throws with 2:01 remaining. Niagara's Kelly Van Leeuwen answered with a three on the ensuing possession to make it a one-point game.
The score would remain a 52-51 Siena lead until the waning seconds when Niagara's Meghan McGuinness was fouled with 5.5 seconds to go. The Purple Eagles' all-time best free throw shooter at 88.4%, McGuinness missed her first attempt but made the second to send the game into overtime.
Niagara would score the first four points of the extra session, but Scarbrough hit a three and senior captain Tehresa Coles scored the driving go-ahead basket to put Siena back in front 57-56 with 1:11 to play.
But Rampado scored on the ensuing possession and following a Siena miss, Maxwell hit a pair of free throws with 21 seconds left to build the Niagara lead to three. Senior Ida Krogh missed a potential game-tying three with 16 seconds to go for the Saints as the Purple Eagles would hold on for the win.
Siena placed four in double figures as sophomore captain Meghan Donohue added 12 points and Coles contributed 11 points and eight rebounds.
Rampado and Taylor McKay scored 14 points apiece for Niagara, while McGuinness finished with 13.
Siena, which is an impressive 9-2 on the road this season, opens a three-game road trip Sunday with a 2 p.m. tip at Iona.
