LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Jessica Roach netted a hat trick and scored the game-winning goal as Vermont handed Siena Women's Lacrosse a hard fought 8-5 loss at Siena Turf Field. Five different players each scored a goal for the Saints.
Siena (0-3) had its best overall defensive performance of the season against a solid Vermont (2-1) team which narrowly lost by just three goals to then sixth ranked Boston College Saturday. The Saints forced the Catamounts into 16 turnovers and goalies Danielle DeLisio and Ashley Holdridge were equally impressive in goal, making seven and five saves respectively.
But Siena could not match that success on the offensive end as the Saints committed 20 turnovers, went scoreless for 34:55 midway through the game and were outshot 22-6 over the final 47 minutes.
Junior attack Sarah Croutier and senior midfielder Erin Mossop scored consecutive goals to pull the Saints even at 3-3 with 16:56 left in the first half. But Vermont rallied to take a 5-3 lead at the half as Siena's drought began.
The Catamounts eventually made it three unanswered goals before junior Kate Callahan finally broke through to pull the Saints within 6-4 with 12:11 to play. Siena continued to battle, but could never get any closer than two goals the rest of the way.
Mossop and junior captain Lauren Smith each tallied a goal and an assist for the Saints, while senior captain Julia Sirianni won five draw controls and caused two turnovers.
Danielle Seifert scored twice and Meg Hopkins made seven saves for Vermont which has won 16 of the 17 all-time meetings between the programs.
The Saints have a quick turnaround as they open a stretch where they play five of their next six games on the road, beginning with a 1 p.m. opening draw at Central Connecticut Friday.
