Siena Women's Lacrosse scored its second most goals and posted the second largest margin of victory in the program's 19 seasons as the Saints throttled Central Connecticut 20-5 in New Britain. Senior midfielder Erin Mossop tied a program record with seven goals as new head coach Bryana Borrelli earned her first win in impressive fashion.
"It was just an awesome win and so rewarding," said Borrelli. "I think it just solidifies what we have been trying to do. This was a turning point for the program and I'm excited to see things start to come together."
Siena (1-3), which had scored just 20 goals total over its first three games, dominated from start to finish. Four Saints scored three or more goals, six posted multi-point games and Siena scored 11 unanswered goals spanning the middle 30 minutes of the game while holding Central Connecticut (1-2) scoreless for 35:24.
"Since Day one we've been really fortunate where the team has bought into our system here," added Borrelli. "We are trying to instill the values of hard work and discipline. It seemed to have been a long time coming and we learned a lot over the last few weeks, but the team really took it upon themselves to improve upon things and they have."
Before the game was even seven minutes old, Mossop had netted a hat trick in spurring the Saints to an early lead as they never looked back in ultimately taking a 12-3 lead at the half. Mossop would score five times in the first half and her seven goals tied with Caitlin Mikel '10 and Christina Pampalone '07 for the program's single-game record. Both Mikel and Pampalone accomplished the feat twice.
"Erin took her game to another level today that we haven't seen yet," explained Borrelli. "She's grown so much these last three games and continued to make adjustments. It just goes to show you that hard work pays off. She put the team on her shoulders in the first few minutes and that set the tone for the rest of the game."
Siena seniors Mossop, Shannon O'Connor and Alyssa Treanor all had big first halves, combining for 10 of the Saints' 12 goals. O'Connor, who had tallied one collegiate goal entering the day, joined Mossop in recording a first half hat trick. Both O'Connor and Treanor finished with hat tricks and four points.
Junior captain Lauren Smith added four goals and classmate Sarah Croutier tied a career-high with five assists in notching six points to tie Allie Kain '10 for 10th on the program's all-time career scoring list with 91 points.
"Offensively we just started to trust each other," noted Borrelli. "We've really harped on limiting mistakes so that we could take more risks. The team took care of the ball today and played to win instead of not to lose and I think that's a huge cornerstone of where we are going."
Defensively, Siena's goalie tandem was equally impressive for the second time in 48 hours. Senior Danielle DeLisio made eight first half saves, while junior Ashley Holdridge stopped three shots during the second half.
Brigit Hogan scored twice for the Blue Devils and Falynn McCartney added two points and won seven draw controls for CCSU which was out-shot 32-21 and out-groundballed 19-11.
Siena continues a stretch where it plays five of six on the road next Saturday, Mar. 7 at defending Northeast Conference Champion Bryant.
