Saturday's Siena women's tennis match at Fairfield was in many ways a microcosm of the season. The Saints were forced to play without two of their top three players, and despite a valiant effort, saw their postseason hopes come to an end with a 5-2 loss to the Stags.
Siena's (7-11, 3-4) top singles player Ali Garrity was a late scratch, meaning every player had to play up in rotation against third place Stags. Freshman Rina Sakai and sophomore Mitsuki Fukamachi responded in a big way, winning at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. Sakai also teamed with classmate Julia Dunbar for an exciting tiebreaker victory at No. 2 doubles.
Allysa Singh, who had won nine of her last 10 singles matches at No. 3 singles also did not play.
Fairfield (7-7, 6-2) took advantage of the depleted roster, winning two of the three doubles matches and the other four singles spots to post the 5-2 victory. The Stags top doubles team eked out an 8-7 (7-5) win that turned the key doubles point, and ultimately the match.
Siena hosts Monmouth on Tuesday in its final match of the season, but the best the Saints can do is tie for fourth and they would lose that tiebreaker to Marist.
Siena's spring season has been filled with tight heartbreaking losses, but the future of the program looks very bright.
